The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
