One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, after the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with others instead covering more material or additional to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Today, anime production is structured in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
